Recommended nest boxes and locations

Choosing a swift nest box

There are quite a few options out there and here is quite a list of them!

We have been fitting boxes made by Peak Boxes during our nest box schemes. We also know that the John Stimpson boxes are proven boxes, and the Impeckable boxes are also highly recommended as they are made with a more weather resistant material which will make the box last much longer.

Choosing a suitable location

Swift nest boxes need to be mounted high up, ideally at least 4.5m above ground level. Birds need to have some shade so they don’t overheat in the nest box, so a North, North-East or East facing wall or gable end is ideal. West or North-West is acceptable but avoid South, South-West and South-East unless you have deep eaves providing a lot of shade.
Also avoid fitting nest boxes very close to trees, cables or other obstructions as swifts need a clear flight path to swoop in and out at high speed. Beware of telephone wires attached to the front of the house (we have a lot of these in Sheffield). NB. You must be willing to leave your box up long term, as swifts will return to the same box each year.

Double boxes cost from £60, single boxes cost from £30. You can contact our highly recommended fitter Jan from Nest box installations who would be more than happy to give you a quote.
